OZ Open 2009 Day 2 Highlights: Nadal in stylish and dominating form

• World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, who is seeking his 6th grand slam, needed only 77 minutes to dispatch Belgian Christophe Rochus 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 to cruise into the second round. The ever stylish Mallorcan is leaving his sleeveless-shirts-and-pirate-pants days behind as he wore a black and white shirt matching his above-the-knee black shorts and black shoes accessorized by chartreuse headband and wristbands (all courtesy of Nike of course :P). At the Qatar Open a few weeks back, Nadal sported collared shirts. While I am loving his looks nowadays, I'm missing his sexy arms and buns (and the bum-crack scratching :P) as well!

• Chilean 13th seed Fernando Gonzalez dented the hopes of local favorite Lleyton Hewitt in the first round, winning in five-set thriller 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 . Fans should forgive Hewitt if he might not be in his top form after being sidelined by hip problems and hip surgery in late 2008, being his worst year of not winning a title since 1998.

• Bookmaker’s top pick Andy Murray had the easiest passage to the second round. He was leading 6-2, 3-1 when his opponent Andrei Pavel retired due to back injury after 45 minutes.

• My hubby No. 2, the cherubic Croatian Mario Ancic prevailed against American Wayne Odesnik. His countrymen Ivo Karlovic, Ivan Ljubicic and Roko Karanusic also recorded wins.

• German hottie Tommy Haas wasted no time in dispatching Eduardo Schwank of Argentina 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.

• Ana Ivanovic’s boyfriend Fernando Verdasco of Spain was too strong against Adrian Mannarino of France, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-2, 6-2.

• American James Blake also won in straight sets against Canadian Frank Dancevic 6-4, 6-3, 7-5.

• Five Frenchmen namely Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon, Richard Gasquet, Gael Monfils, Arnaud Clement and Sebastien de Chaunac sailed through the second round; compatriots Florent Serra, Nicolas Devilderder and Adrian Mannarino were not as lucky.

• The only seeded casualty for the day is my Russian crush 29th seed Dmitri Tursunov, who fell to Flavio Cipolla of Italy 4-6, 6-2, 7-6, 7-5.

• In the women’s division, Williams sisters stamped their authority by recording straight-sets wins over their opponents with Serena outclassing Meng Yuan of China 6-3, 6-2 and Venus a winner over Germany’s Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-3.

• Olympic champion Elena Dementieva might be reeling from the effects of winning two straight titles this year (Auckland and Sydney) but still managed to pull out a win in three sets against Kristina Barrois of Germany 7-6, 2-6, 6-1.

• Grand slam winners Svetlana Kuznetsova and Amelie Mauresmo also coasted into the second round.

• Biggest casualty is 9th seed Polish Agnieszka Radwanska, who fell into the hands of Katerina Bondarenko of Ukraine 6-7, 6-4, 1-6.
